So I'm looking for Wharf Rats that drip with pathos and segue into and/or out of some nice cosmic jamming. The ones I really like right now that sound sort of like this to me are 2/18/71, 6/8/74, 6/28/74, 10/20/74 and 4/22/78. I need more recommendations... maybe some from '73? Any era is fine of course.

I been lovin' me some good Wharf Rats lately. May just be my favorite Jer ballad. What are all yours, if you *had* to choose just one?

My two favorites come within a 2 week period:

12/28/78 & 1/8/79. Both are very fine shows as well. I'd still rather here Comes a Time or Dew.

Speaking in Swords: How about a "Wharf Rat > Comes A Time?"
1976-06-12 (Boston)

...also has one of only 5 "GD" performances of "Mission in the Rain" for you. .."Row Jimmy" ..."High Time" ..."The Wheel" ...

When you're in the mood for some high-powered lightning bolts: 1977-11-06 (Binghampton)

As for my favorite, it's not a ballad, but "Attics of My Life" is it.

If its '73 Wharf Rats you seek stop what you're doing and check this puppy out from Baltimore. This is truly sublime. It goes from the Weather Report Prelude Jam>Wharf Rat>Me & Bobby McGee>Eyes>Morning Dew. The WRS Prelude jam is the perfect intro to Wharf Rat and its also one of the finest jams of '73. They have only put track numbers on the link but its disc 3 tracks 6-8. Check it out!!http://www.archive.org/details/gd73-03-26.sbd.miller-ashley.1373.sbeok.shnf
One of my other all-time faves is 7/18/76 with a long intro and outro jam :

If you like weird check out 9/11/74 from London which unfortunatly is not available to stream on the archive. Set 2 Seastones>Eyes>Jam>Space>Jam>Wharf Rat>Space. End of set 2.
That 3/26/73 is a MUST!

Some of these selections are just flat-out flooring me. Seriously. Thanks so much everyone!

Also anyone who hasn't heard the Playin' > Wharf > Playin' from 6/8/74 should do himself the favor of at least streaming it. Gotta love Garcia's MLB teases in the Wharf Rat coda before touching on the main ten again.

I also vote for 11/6/77. The build up to the "I'll get up and fly away" section makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck every time I hear it (and I listen to this show alot!).

Enjoying the exceptional Wharf rat from the Boston '77 show referenced in the thread below, it seems to go on and on, which in this case is very nice...

http://www.archive.org/details/gd77-05-07.sbd.unknown.262.sbefail.shnf

The Wharf Rat from Robword's favorite show jams out as well...

Unfortunately, some of the best jammed out Wharf Rats are on shows that have been pulled from the archive, but I'm sure you can find 'em...

4/5/71 Manhattan Center features some nice jamming, 4/25/77 Capitol Theater is over 16 minutes long, but only circulates as an aud?. 10/16/74 is almost 17 minutes, and the jamming is more spacial.

first one was it imo. the DS > WR > DS is one of my favorite performances ever by the band.

I think 11/1 and 11/6 are the two killers from 77.

very nice wharf rat from 5/1/81.

5-7-77. I heard this one for the first time in a long time recently and I can't think of any I like more. Jerry's voice is great, as is the jam at the end.
